Coyote Survey

The first SEIMDF Coyote Calling contest was February 16, 2008.  Contestants gathered at Sportsman's Warehouse in Pocatello Friday night to register and pay the $50 entry fee and then returned to the same site Saturday morning to pick up jaw blocks, zip ties and turn-in instructions.  29 teams participated in the event, killing a total of 27 coyotes under far less than ideal conditions.

The weather for the event was nearly perfect, but temperatures in Pocatello started at 5 degrees and warmed into the lower 40s.  Snow depth across most of southern Idaho is very deep this year, severely limiting the ability of hunters to get around.  Participants in the contest came from Pocatello, Chubbuck, American Falls, Blackfoot, Inkom, McCammon, Dubois, Monteview and Preston.

Teams had to return to the drop-off point by 5PM to have their coyotes counted and weighed for the contest.  Several teams returned early, exhausted by walking in the deep snow and without a coyote for their effort. Everyone enjoyed the chili feed provided by the Foundation for the hunters while they waited for the hunt results to be tabulated and posted.

The first prize of $363 for the most coyotes taken during the hunt went to Phillips and Quinn with 6 coyotes.  The second place prize of $290 went to Harding and Thuernagle with 4 dogs. The next two teams tied with three coyotes each, but the tie was decided by the weight of the coyotes shot.  Third prize of $218 went to Harker and Howell with three coyotes and a total weight of 85 pounds.  Fourth prize of $145 went to Ursenbach and Hughes with three coyotes and a total weight of 80 pounds.

We also awarded a prize for the largest ($100) and smallest ($50) coyotes taken during the hunt.  Both prizes were taken by the team of Harding and Thuernagle. The SEIMDF also raffled a rifle to everyone participating in the hunt.  The Remington Model 700 SPS rifle in .204 Ruger caliber was provided by Sportsman's Warehouse and was won by Ben Hopkins.

Everyone seemed to have good time and unanimously want to do it again next year. The photo below is of some of the teams and all of coyotes taken during the hunt. By the way, the fox didn't count.
